ONEPLUS 8 PRO CAMERA REVIEW

OnePlus 8 Pro Camera Review

Since its launch in April 2020, the OnePlus 8 Pro has received impressive acclaim. Its camera outperformed the Galaxy S20 Series at a fraction of the cost. You may not know about OnePlus smartphones but you’re in the right place to learn.

In this article, we’ll compare the OnePlus 8 Pro camera to its older models, review it, and highlight its noteworthy features.

How Did OnePlus 8 Pro Upgrade From the 7T Pro?

The most prominent upgrade from the 7T Pro is the 8 Pro’s display. It measures 6.78 inches, while the old one measures 6.67. The old display was also a bit rounded, while the 8 Pro takes more of a squared approach.

There’s also one significant difference with the selfie camera, which goes on the display in the 8 Pro. In the 7T Pro, it was a pop-up camera to allow more screen space. As for the 8 Pro’s camera, it’s a punch-hole design that lies on the display’s top left side.

These aren’t the only differences, though. The 8 Pro’s display also now supports a 120Hz refresh rate, while the old display only supported 90Hz. This improvement allows for much better visibility when scrolling.

The 8 Pro has its rear camera in the middle of the phone. The 7T Pro also had it in this location, but the 8 Pro added some sensors around the left of the primary camera.

Moving on to the camera specs, OnePlus outdid themselves with the 8 Pro. The 7T had a 48MP sensor on the primary camera, and the 8 Pro has the same. However, the 16MP sensor of wide angles was upgraded to 48MP in the 8 Pro. Not only that, but the telephoto sensor also went from 8MP to 12MP.

Moreover, the 8 Pro comes with a 5MP color filter, which enables the user to take photos in different light spectrums. This particular OnePlus 8Pro feature is a little lacking and needs some work.

The 8 Pro and the 8 have a lot in common, but there are a few differences that make for the gap between their prices. For instance, both phones come with the same RAM, processor, storage, and build. However, the Pro version comes with some noticeable upgrades, namely the camera system, wireless charging, and display.

The OnePlus 8 has a 90Hz refresh rate – the same as the 7T Pro – whereas the Pro 8 features 120Hz. In other words, you’ll notice improved display resolution when scrolling.

The 8 is a nice phone and it offers great value for money. It has a decent Snapdragon 865 processor, and it features 12GB of RAM. Additionally, it comes with a 4300 mAh battery and an impressive Android 10 OxygenOS.

All that said, the fact that the OnePlus 8 isn’t too different from the 7T Pro is a bit disappointing. In fact, it shares more similarities with it than differences. Meanwhile, the OnePlus 8 costs comparatively more than the 7T. If you’re looking for the best value for money, the 7T Pro would be the obvious choice but if you’re getting an upgrade anyway the 8 is acceptable.

The OnePlus 8 Pro camera is the most technically impressive OnePlus offering. It’s considered expensive compared to budget offerings and inexpensive compared to flagship offerings. As a result, the OnePlus 8 Pro is a truly unique phone for mobile photography and filmmaking as it seemingly packs all the bits of included luxury into its camera. If you’re a mobile photographer looking for a new smartphone then the 8 Pro from OnePlus is a must-see.

Now, let’s explore the camera on the OnePlus 8 Pro a bit more. The phone comes fully equipped with standard (wide), ultrawide, and telephoto lenses. Additionally, there’s a near-infrared sensor that’s labeled as the ‘color filter camera.’ Did you know that you can even use OnePlus devices with Moment lenses? Moment makes M-Series cases for OnePlus phones so in choosing the OnePlus 8 Pro you’ll be able to take full advantage of your mobile photography gear.

When it comes to the main camera and the telephoto lens, OnePlus didn’t improve a whole lot. However, the main camera now comes with omnidirectional PDAF, laser autofocus, and optical image stabilization.

Most of the major upgrades are in the ultra-wide camera, which improved leaps and bounds from the 7T Pro to the 8 Pro. It now features a 48MP quad-Bayer sensor with an output of 12MP. Not to mention that the PDAF autofocus is upgraded from the 7T Pro.

When it comes to video specs, the 8 Pro is capable of shooting 4K footage at both 60 and 30 frames per second. Not only that, but there’s also a 240fps slo-mo – do note the resolution drops to 1080P.

Furthermore, there’s an Auto HDR for video shooting to improve the dynamic range when you’re working in high contrast lighting. There’s also a gyroscope-enabled EIS which smooths unwanted motion jitters out of your video.

Is the OnePlus 8 Pro Camera Good?

Mark Spoonauer on Twitter: “First OnePlus 8 Pro 48MP camera samples.”

The OnePlus 8 Pro is a huge improvement from its predecessors. Its camera specs can easily be compared to high-end competitors but at a more budget phone price point.

The ultra-wide and telephoto lenses offer a wide range of shooting options for mobile photography enthusiasts. The color filter camera is eh but not the other three cameras make up for its lackluster performance.

The OnePlus 8 Pro video specs are nothing to shake a stick at either. While it may not deliver the color accuracy and overall performance of the newest iPhone, the OnePlus 8 Pro is closer to the top than some of the industry giants. It’s safe to say that OnePlus is here to stay, so let us know your thoughts about OnePlus camera phones in the comments!
